Walking on the Ramparts

The old city walls of Jerusalem date back to the 16th century CE. As they were built to defend the city you can also climb up and walk on them – the route around the old city center is well secured but includes many steps up and down; and it is not suitable for children. It is a good chance to look into the backyards and see how everyday life in such a town can exist.

You can access the ramparts at the Jaffa gate – the entry point is easily visible, tickets can be purchased at the shop close to it. Not all parts of the ramparts are always open to the public. Especially in Ramadan the parts close to the Temple Mount are closed. I took a nice walk from Jaffa gate to Herods gate; even if you can access the walk only at a few points – you can exit it at any gate by turnstiles.
