The Westerturm

If you walk across the city center of Duderstadt, Germany you cannot omit seeing the Westerturm – the last visible part of the city fortifications. It is a gate first mentioned in 1343 and it has a specialty: the tower on top is twisted because of a construction mistake.

It was destroyed by a fire in 1424 and in 1999 the deterioration was so big that restauration works had to be planned. It is said that the twisted top is the work of the devil: the architect was behind his plan and sold his soul to the devil to ensure that his work gets ready just in time. Afterwards he chose to not give his soul away and in anger the devil grabbed the top of the Westerturm and twisted it.

Since 2011 there is a small but wonderful museum within the tower and the attached buildings. You can learn about the citizens rights and the protection of the city. Additionally you can walk on a small part of the ancient city wall and climb up inside the tower.
