Iberg

Rising gently above Heilbad Heiligenstadt, the Iberg mountain offers a rewarding and well-marked hiking circuit known as the TOP-Wanderweg „Erlebnis Iberg“. This route showcases the diverse natural and historical features of northern Thüringen. Although the trail involves a noticeable incline, particularly during the gradual ascent through the Langes Tal (‘long valley‘), the climb unfolds in a comfortable rhythm, making it suitable for anyone with moderate hiking experience. The path is well-maintained, with clear signposts and rest areas that invite you to take in the surrounding forested landscape.

One of the highlights early on is the Ibergwarte, a lookout tower perched near the summit that rewards the effort with fine panoramic views. On clear days, you can see across the Eichsfeld region and deep into the surrounding hills. Continuing along the route, the Maienwand offers a striking rock formation and viewpoint, beloved by local walkers for its quiet solitude and broad vistas over the valley below. The Elisabethhöhe, another elevated section of the path, adds a different perspective, especially in autumn when the beech forests glow in golden tones.

Midway through the route, you encounter the Klöppelsklus, a charming woodland chapel that adds a touch of local lore and tranquillity to the journey. Not far from there lies the Kurfürstenstein, a historical boundary marker that reminds walkers of the region’s complex past and its former division between states. The trail design cleverly interlaces such points of interest with stretches of peaceful forest, keeping the experience both varied and deeply relaxing.

Rounding off the circuit, the Iberg-Haus provides an excellent spot to pause, recharge and perhaps enjoy some refreshments before descending. The entire Erlebnis Iberg trail loops neatly back toward the starting point near Heilbad Heiligenstadt, which is easily reached by train – just a short walk from the railway station leads to the trailhead. Whether undertaken as a full-day excursion or a shorter loop, this route delivers a fine balance of nature, views, and cultural touches that capture the essence of Eichsfeld’s upland charm.
