Presidential park

A significant green oasis set at the heart of Kazakhstan’s capital, opened in 2008 to mark the 10th anniversary of Capital City Day. The park reflects Астана’s transformation into a modern metropolis. Covering nearly 80 hectares, the park was planned to complement the nearby Ak Orda presidential palace and serves as an inviting space for locals and visitors. You’ll find wide lawns, a variety of trees, and distinctive water features, particularly a grand fountain shaped like the mythical Samruk bird – a cherished Kazakh symbol of life and freedom. The atmosphere here changes beautifully with the seasons, offering colorful flowers in spring, verdant stretches in summer, and a tranquil snow-covered landscape during the winter.

The park itself is remarkably striking and thoughtfully designed. It offers spacious walking and cycling paths, peaceful ponds with reeds, as well as specially-designed playgrounds and gathering spaces. The landscape unfolds in soft undulating hills topped by dense trees, inviting picnics, family outings, and relaxing strolls. From several vantage points, visitors can enjoy thoughtful views of Астана’s futuristic skyline, while an array of sculptures and monuments provide snapshots of Kazakhstan’s rich heritage. The park’s design emphasizes harmony, with water features that transform between tranquil lakes and lively fountains throughout the day, all inspired by national mythology and modern Kazakh ambitions.

A central attraction within the park is the Palace of Peace and Reconciliation – often called ‚the pyramid‘. Rising 62 meters above the landscape, this remarkable, glass-clad structure was designed by renowned architect Norman Foster. It’s not just an architectural marvel but also a unifying cultural landmark. The pyramid was built to host the triennial Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions, serving as a symbol of harmony and intercultural dialogue. Today, it accommodates an expansive opera hall, exhibition spaces, and meeting rooms. The glass apex, decorated with 130 doves, represents the many ethnic groups of Kazakhstan. Whether attending an event, marveling at the interplay of sunlight on stained glass, or simply admiring the futuristic exterior, the pyramid perfectly encapsulates Астана’s spirit of unity and optimistic vision for the future.
