Kolsai

The two Kolsai lakes near Саты offer a truly spectacular retreat for nature lovers and adventurers. Known as Kolsai-1 and Kolsai-2, these alpine jewels are encircled by pine forests, striking peaks, and lush slopes dotted with wildflowers. Kolsai-1, the lowest and most accessible, sits at around 1,800 meters above sea level and is an ideal spot for picnics, easy walking, and canoeing. The tranquility of the lake, especially in the early morning when mist hovers over crystal-clear waters, makes it a perfect escape from the buzz of daily life.

A road in good condition leads to a place above the lake with a large amount of parking lots, restaurants and facilities. From there you can walk on wooden steps down to the Kolsai-1 and walk on wooden path a fair distance around the lake. At one end you can rent boats to explore the lake on your own. When it is time to return to your car you need to hike up the hill. There is a shuttle with a minibus but it has a very limited number of seats and locals are fighting hard to get in.

The real adventure begins if you set out from Kolsai-1 on the trail towards Kolsai-2. The hiking route, moderately challenging yet rewarding, winds about 8 km through pristine valleys and forests alive with bird calls. Reaching Kolsai-2 at an altitude of about 2,250 meters feels like stepping into a hidden world. Its deeper blue waters, surrounded by steep mountain ridges and thick forests, create a dramatic panorama and a sense of absolute seclusion. If you time your hike right, you may encounter local horse riders or shepherds, adding a touch of authentic Kazakh culture to your journey. Locals actually recommend not to hike but to ride on horseback because of the current quality of the path.

Both lakes are part of the Kolsai Lakes National Park, a protected natural haven offering camping, horse trekking, and opportunities to observe the local wildlife. The area is home to marmots, mountain goats, and sometimes even elusive snow leopards. Whether you prefer a leisurely lakeside stroll, a longer trek between the lakes, or a night under the stars at one of the rustic campsites, the Kolsai lakes deliver an unforgettable experience. For travelers based in Алматы or nearby, a visit here provides a remarkable blend of adventure and serenity, far away from the crowds.
