Буханка

Located within the rugged Tien Shan mountains, Kaindy lake is one of Kazakhstan’s most surreal natural wonders. Just a short drive from the small mountain village of Саты, the lake instantly captivates with its ghostly, submerged spruce trunks and impossibly clear, blue-green waters. At over 2,000 meters above sea level, the air is crisp and tinged with pine, and the scenery feels untouched – a living postcard that hardly seems real.

Getting to Kaindy lake is an adventure in itself, as the journey from Саты involves traversing some truly challenging roads. The path winds through rocky riverbeds and up steep, uneven forest trails. Ordinary cars are no match for these conditions, especially after rain, as thick mud and loose gravel make progress slow and bumpy. The road is undeniably rough, but reaching the lake is well worth every jolt and turn.

One popular and practical way to make this trek is by hiring a ‚Buchanka’ taxi. These vehicles are an iconic sight in rural Kazakhstan, famously capable of handling even the most unforgiving terrain. The Buchanka, known officially as the UAZ-452, is a boxy Soviet-era van whose name translates to ‚loaf of bread’ because of its unique shape. With its high ground clearance and robust four-wheel drive, it’s built for exactly these sorts of rugged journeys, and its seasoned drivers know every twist and hazard of the mountain path. At the parking lot you need to decide how to continue: the best way is to ride by horse to the lake. If that is not your cup of tea, take another Buchanka up the hill to a small lake. From there it is a 2 km hike down to Kaindy lake.

Traveling to Kaindy lake by Buchanka is as much a part of the experience as the destination itself. Bouncing along in the simple, rumbling van with fellow adventurers, you’ll feel a sense of camaraderie and anticipation building as you draw closer to the lake. The Buchanka’s utilitarian charm and the wild, scenic landscape make this an unforgettable adventure – one that’s uniquely Kazakh and impossible to replicate anywhere else.
