Black canyon

The Қара каньон near Актогай is one of Kazakhstan’s lesser-known but truly awe-inspiring natural wonders. Stretching approximately three kilometers wide and plunging to depths of up to 300 meters, the canyon dazzles with its dramatic cliffs, layered rock faces, and vibrant colors that shift throughout the day. Standing on the edge, you are greeted by sweeping vistas and a remarkable sense of isolation, far from the crowds, making it perfect for travelers craving unspoiled wilderness and jaw-dropping photo opportunities.

Adventure awaits on the numerous trails that snake through the canyon, suitable for both casual explorers and dedicated hikers. The terrain is rugged but rewarding, with each turn revealing new perspectives – whether it’s sheer basalt walls, winding riverbeds far below, or glimpses of eagles soaring overhead. If you’re lucky, you might encounter native wildlife or rare plants endemic to this unique ecosystem. The geology itself is a living museum, with every formation telling a story about the region’s deep natural history.

Most people will probably just stop next to the road and have a look into the abyss. Already that is amazing as you can see the river with its green waters running through the canyon lined up with beautiful trees. Next to road P-16 some business men have set-up a secured viewpoint including a coffee bar – if you want to stay especially safe or are traveling with kids.
