Altyn-Emel

Altyn-Emel National Park in Kazakhstan is a remarkable destination for travelers seeking unique natural phenomena and diverse landscapes. Spanning over half a million hectares, the park preserves a fascinating mixture of desert, steppe, canyon, and mountain environments. One of its most extraordinary features is the singing dunes – a towering mass of quartz sand approximately 1.5 kilometers long and up to 120 meters high. These dunes produce an eerie, low humming sound when the dry sand grains rub together as the wind moves them, a rare phenomenon found only in a few places worldwide. The sound can carry for kilometers, creating a surreal atmosphere for visitors.

The singing dunes are located in the southern central part of Altyn-Emel, on the right bank of the Ili river between the Ulken and Kishi Kalkan mountain ranges. This spot is about 46 kilometers from the small town of Басши, which serves as the gateway to the park. Басшиis where visitors must purchase park tickets and where guesthouses provide accommodation. These lodgings offer basic but comfortable stays, suitable for exploring the park’s many attractions, including the dunes, Aktau and Katutau mountains, and ancient archaeological sites.

Apart from natural wonders, Altyn-Emel is steeped in history and legend. The area is linked to Genghis Khan, whose Mongol army passed through the territory in the 13th century. Some folk tales say the great conqueror may have even been buried beneath the sands of the singing dunes, while ancient menhirs known as Oshaktas nearby are believed to be remnants of his warriors’ campfires. The park also preserves numerous endangered plants and animals, making it an important biodiversity haven in Kazakhstan’s Tian Shan foothill region.

Visiting Altyn-Emel requires some planning, given its remote location about 300 kilometers from Алматы. Most travelers arrive by car or organized tours, often staying in Басши to access the park center. The experience of climbing the singing dunes barefoot, hearing their unique sounds, and soaking in panoramic views from the ridge is unforgettable. For nature lovers and adventure seekers, Altyn-Emel offers a rare blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and a touch of mystery far from more frequented tourist spots.
