Meyer-Werft

The MEYER WERFT in Papenburg is a shipyard with a remarkable legacy, having been founded in 1795 by Willm Rolf Meyer. Initially, the company focused on building small wooden sailing vessels, which was typical for the region at the time. Over the centuries, the shipyard demonstrated a pioneering spirit, especially in the late 19th century when it became the first in the area to switch from wooden ships to iron-hulled steamers – a move that secured its survival while many other local shipyards closed down.

The transition to iron shipbuilding, led by Joseph Lambert Meyer (whose name you can see still painted to the walls of the wharf), was met with skepticism from the community, but it proved to be a visionary step. By the early 20th century, MEYER WERFT had diversified its production, building not only cargo and passenger ships but also specialized vessels like gas tankers and ferries. The shipyard continued to innovate, and in 1986, it launched its first cruise ship, marking the beginning of its specialization in large, modern luxury liners.

Today, MEYER WERFT is one of the most advanced shipyards in the world and a key player in the global cruise ship industry. It remains a family-run business in its seventh generation and employs over 3,300 people directly in Papenburg, with thousands more jobs in the region tied to its extensive supplier network. The shipyard’s presence has made Papenburg synonymous with shipbuilding and has established the town as an anchor point on the European Route of Industrial Heritage.

The economic and cultural impact of MEYER WERFT on the Papenburg region cannot be overstated. It is the largest employer in the area, providing stability and opportunities for generations of families. The shipyard’s training programs contribute to the local workforce’s skills, and its international reputation attracts visitors and industry professionals from around the world. MEYER WERFT’s continued innovation and adaptability have ensured that Papenburg remains a vibrant industrial hub, deeply intertwined with the history and future of shipbuilding. At the time of writing, the ship Disney Destiny was built. Walking from the city to the visitors center needs around 45 minutes, a taxi costs 20 Euros.
