Tunis-Carthage

The Aéroport International de Tunis-Carthage (TUN), serving the capital of Tunisia, is steeped in history that dates back to 1920 when the first seaplane base was established on the lake of تونس. The airport officially opened as an airfield in 1938, initially handling a modest number of passengers on the ParisTunis route. During World War II, it played a strategic role as a base for the United States Air Force during the Italian Campaign, serving as a hub for reconnaissance and transport missions. Post-war, the airport was developed further with French funding and became the main hub for Tunisair in 1948, connecting تونس with various Mediterranean and European destinations.

The airport is named after the ancient city of Carthage, which lies just to the east, linking modern air travel with the rich historical legacy of the region. Over the decades, it has expanded significantly, with terminal enlargements in the late 1990s and 2000s to accommodate growing passenger numbers. Today, it serves as a major gateway for both domestic and international flights, operated by several airlines including Tunisair, Nouvelair, and international carriers. Its strategic location and historical significance make it not just a transit point but a symbol of Tunisia’s connection to both its past and its role in global aviation networks.

Travelers arriving at Tunis-Carthage Airport often experience a blend of history and modernity. The airport’s proximity to the capital allows for a quick immersion into Tunisian culture and history, from the ancient ruins of Carthage to the vibrant city life. The airport also reflects Tunisia’s colonial and wartime past, as well as its post-independence development, making it a fascinating starting point for anyone interested in the historical layers of North Africa. If you take a taxi from here to the city center don’t pay more than 22 dinars. There are taxis with manipulated meters and they’ll try to rip you off. Better use the InDrive app; Bolt and Uber were not working. Good ATMs are available in the baggage collection hall.
