Curchi monastery, located near the village of Curchi in Orhei district, is one of Moldova’s most beautiful and significant Orthodox monastic complexes. Set in the picturesque Vatici valley and surrounded by forests and orchards, the monastery is renowned for its peaceful atmosphere and striking architecture, making it a popular destination for both pilgrims and tourists. The ensemble includes five churches, monastic cells, administrative buildings, and a bell tower, all harmoniously integrated into the lush landscape.

The history of Curchi monastery dates back to 1773, when brothers Iordache and Mihail Curchi founded a modest wooden hermitage on the site. The first wooden church, dedicated to St. Great Martyr Demetrius, was built around 1775, followed by the construction of stone churches in the early 19th century, including the main church dedicated to the Nativity of the Mother of God, consecrated in 1810. Over time, the monastery grew in size and importance, becoming one of the richest and most influential monastic institutions in Moldova by the 19th century.
Curchi monastery’s history also reflects the turbulent events of the 20th century. It was closed by Soviet authorities in 1958, and its buildings were repurposed as a psychiatric hospital, leading to significant neglect and damage. Restoration efforts began in the early 2000s, and today the monastery has regained its role as a spiritual and cultural center, drawing visitors who seek tranquility, history, and the beauty of Moldovan religious heritage.
