Parcul Ștefan cel Mare, also known as Stephen the Great Park, is the oldest and most cherished green space in central Chișinău. Established in the early 19th century, it spans about 7 hectares and is a favorite gathering spot for both locals and visitors, especially during the warm months. The atmosphere is peaceful yet lively, with shaded walkways, mature trees, and benches where people relax, read, or enjoy conversations. In the heart of the park, a beautiful fountain provides a refreshing centerpiece, while children’s playgrounds and merry-go-rounds make it a welcoming place for families.

One of the park’s most distinctive features is the Alley of the Classics, a walkway lined with busts of Moldova’s and Romania’s most prominent writers, poets, and political figures. This avenue serves as a living museum, celebrating the shared literary and cultural heritage of the two nations. The park also displays other sculptures, including a bust of Alexander Pushkin, reflecting the city’s diverse historical influences. The green lawns and flowerbeds, along with the well-maintained paths, create an inviting environment for leisurely strolls and quiet reflection.
At the main entrance stands the imposing monument to Ștefan cel Mare (Stephen the Great), a 15th-century ruler revered as a national hero. Designed by Alexandru Plămădeală and inaugurated in 1928, the bronze statue depicts Ștefan in a commanding pose, symbolizing his strength and leadership. The monument is not only a focal point for the park but also a site for official ceremonies and national celebrations, underscoring its significance in Moldovan identity.
The monument to Ștefan cel Mare also highlights the deep historical and cultural ties between Moldova and Romania. Stephen the Great ruled over Moldavia, a principality whose territory now spans both modern Moldova and parts of Romania. He is celebrated for defending the land against Ottoman and other invasions, preserving its autonomy and Orthodox Christian heritage. His legacy is central to both countries’ national narratives, and the monument in Chișinău serves as a reminder of their shared history, language, and aspirations for unity.
