Chișinău International Airport, known in Romanian as Aeroportul Internațional Chișinău, is the main gateway for air travel in Moldova. Located approximately 14 kilometers southeast of the capital city, Chișinău, the airport serves as the country’s largest and only airport with regular passenger flights. Opened in 1960, it has played a central role in connecting Moldova to various international destinations and was the headquarters for the national airline, Air Moldova.
In January 2024, the airport’s IATA code changed from KIV to RMO, reflecting the country’s official name in Romanian (Republica Moldova). The airport has undergone significant modernization since the 1990s, particularly with a major renovation completed in 2002 that expanded its facilities and increased its annual capacity to 5.4 million passengers. The terminal complex now includes multiple check-in desks, gates, and a VIP terminal, as well as a visitors’ terrace. Recent infrastructure projects have focused on upgrading runways, taxiways, and safety systems, with support from European financial institutions.
Chișinău International Airport is served by a range of international airlines offering both scheduled and charter flights to destinations across Europe, the Middle East, and beyond. Carriers such as Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa, Turkish Airlines, Wizz Air, and FlyOne operate regular routes, making the airport a vital hub for Moldovan travelers and visitors. The airport is rather small but passing it might take some time due to long lines at immigration. While there are public busses going to and from the airport still best option seems to take a taxi for 250 Leu (12 Euro) to the center. Negotiate upfront.
