Laguna de Tiscapa

The Laguna de Tiscapa is a volcanic crater lake in the heart of Managua, Nicaragua, offering panoramic views of the city. Perched on its edge is the Sandino Monument, a towering silhouette of General Augusto César Sandino, the revolutionary leader who fought against U.S. military intervention in Nicaragua during the early 20th century. The monument, erected in the 1990s, stands as a powerful symbol of national resistance and pride. The area surrounding the lagoon has historical significance, as it once housed the presidential palace and later the notorious Somoza family’s military headquarters. Today, the site serves as a tourist attraction and a place of reflection on Nicaragua’s tumultuous past.

On March 21, 1934, this very location became the site of one of Nicaragua’s most infamous political assassinations. After negotiating a peace agreement with President Juan Bautista Sacasa, Sandino was invited to a meeting at the presidential house near Tiscapa. However, as he and his men were leaving, they were ambushed and executed by forces loyal to General Anastasio Somoza García, who would later establish a brutal family dictatorship that ruled Nicaragua for over four decades. The assassination marked a turning point in the country’s history, cementing Somoza’s rise to power and turning Sandino into a martyr of Nicaraguan resistance. Today, the monument at Laguna de Tiscapa stands as a reminder of Sandino’s legacy and the struggle for national sovereignty.

You can access the monument and the viewpoint via car from the Avenida Bolivar, close to the Crowne Plaza Hotel known historically as El Inter. You’ll have to pay a small entrance fee per car and will then find a playground and two small coffee bars close to the monument.
