Sloths are fascinating creatures known for their slow-moving lifestyle and unique adaptations to life in the treetops. These arboreal mammals spend most of their time hanging upside down from branches, using their long claws to grip tightly onto tree limbs. Sloths have an incredibly slow metabolism, which allows them to conserve energy and move at a leisurely pace. They sleep for up to 20 hours a day and only descend to the forest floor about once a week to defecate. Their diet consists mainly of leaves, buds, and occasionally fruits, which they digest slowly over the course of several days.

Costa Rica is home to two species of sloths: the Hoffman’s two-toed sloth and the brown-throated three-toed sloth. These gentle creatures have become iconic symbols of the country’s rich biodiversity and are a major attraction for eco-tourists. Many places in Costa Rica organize sloth tours to give visitors a chance to observe these elusive animals in their natural habitat. One such tour is offered by Sloth’s Territory in La Fortuna, where visitors can enjoy a 1.5-hour guided experience for $40 USD per adult. Taking a guided tour is highly recommended, as sloths are notoriously difficult to spot in the wild without expert knowledge and proper equipment. Their slow movements and ability to blend in with the foliage make them masters of camouflage, often going unnoticed by untrained eyes.
The tour at Sloth’s Territory at La Fortuna was great, we could get pretty close to some of them and see a mother with her baby as well as a rather fast-moving sloth in the tree tops. The paths through the place are well prepared and even include suspension bridges. It is not a cheap thing to do but something you definitely need to do once while you’re at Costa Rica.
