Antigua

Antigua Guatemala, meaning ‘Old Guatemala‘, is a captivating colonial city nestled in the central highlands of Guatemala. Founded in 1543 as Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala, it served as the capital of the Captaincy General of Guatemala until 1773, when a series of devastating earthquakes prompted the relocation of the capital to present-day Ciudad de Guatemala. Despite this setback, Antigua has preserved its rich colonial heritage, earning it UNESCO World Heritage status in 1979.

Today, Antigua Guatemala is a living museum of Spanish colonial architecture, with its cobblestone streets, pastel-colored facades, and impressive ruins telling the story of its tumultuous past. The city’s skyline is dominated by the imposing Volcán de Agua, providing a dramatic backdrop to its historical landmarks. Visitors can explore the ruins of the Antigua Catedral de Santiago Apóstol, a testament to the city’s former grandeur, and the Antiguo Colegio de la Compañía de Jesús, which once housed a prestigious Jesuit college. The iconic Arco Santa Catalina, a bright yellow arch spanning Calle del Arco, is perhaps the most photographed site in the city.

The heart of Antigua is the Parque Central, where visitors can admire the Fountain of the Sirens and the impressive facade of the Real Palacio de los Capitanes Generales. Nearby, the Catedral San José stands as a more modest replacement for the ruined cathedral. Religious architecture enthusiasts will appreciate the ornate Baroque facade of Iglesia de La Merced (which you can also climb on top) and the serene Iglesia Santo Hermano Pedro de San José Betancur. For a panoramic view of the city, a hike to Cerro de La Cruz is a must. Those interested in local crafts can visit Nim Po’t, a treasure trove of Guatemalan textiles and handicrafts. For a glimpse into daily life, the public washing place at Tanque La Unión offers a nice experience.

Antigua Guatemala‘s charm lies not only in its historical sites but also in its vibrant contemporary culture. Visitors can enjoy a refreshing break at El Bosque, a popular beer garden, or enjoy the Ruinas de la Iglesia de la Candelaria for a quieter moment of reflection. For comfortable accommodations with secure parking, the aparthotel All Suite El Marques is an excellent choice near the city center. Many tourists opt to skip Ciudad de Guatemala in favor of Antigua Guatemala due to its compact size, walkable streets, rich history, and perceived safety. The city’s proximity to the capital (about 45 kilometers) makes it an ideal base for exploring the region (including the Lago de Atitlán) while enjoying a more relaxed and picturesque environment steeped in colonial charm.
