Jardín Ménara

Where do the locals of Marrakech spend their Sunday afternoons? A lot of them you can find in the relaxed atmosphere of the Jardín Ménara, a vast olive grove in the southwest of the city. Between these olive trees people gather for a picnic, play and make music. Food and drinks are sold on the ways leading through the garden and to the large water reservoir in its center. The garden was created in 1156 by the rulers of the Almohad caliphate and today belongs to the Marrakech UNESCO world heritage site.

Most tourists get here for a view on the bassin (used to water the trees) and the pavilion created next to it in 1869. The pavilion reflected in the water with the Atlas mountains in the background is a beloved photo opportunity. Getting to the gardens from the city center is most easy by taxi or horse buggy. You can also walk, but that is three kilometers hike. If you do so, make use of the small pavilions at the Park Moulay Hassan for short breaks and drop in at the Ménara Mall; you don’t need to go shopping – the prices are like at home, but there are nice coffee bars in front of the mall.
