In 1969 The Beatles published their 11th album, one of the most successful albums of all times with still today well known songs like Come Together, Octopus’s Garden and Here Comes the Sun. It was the last studio album of the band and recorded at the Abbey Road Studios in the city quarter St. John’s Wood of London. The band initially wanted to name the album Everest and fly to the Himalaya to shoot the cover picture, but then found it more convenient to just walk out the door and take the picture directly in front of the recording studio.
That is why this famous album is just named Abbey Road and the cover image is John, Paul, George and Ringo walking over the pedestrian crosswalk after each other – one of the most iconic album covers in music history. Still today people get to Abbey Road to imitate it; London authorities were so kind to put some benches next to the road to give you the opportunity to observe this quaint situation in a relaxed manner (the drivers passing by are often not that relaxed…). To get to Abbey Road take the tube stop St. John’s Wood on the Jubilee Line. By the way: the VW beetle on the cover is today exhibited at the VW museum at Wolfsburg.
