Casa de la Vall

It is said that the country of Andorra was created by Charlemagne in 788 CE, but officially it was established in the year 1278 and by then always reigned by two people: a Spanish bishop and a French count. In the year 1419 a first parliament was established, the Consell de la Terra (later named Consell General de les Valls). They met on public squares or even the cemetery to discuss important political matters related to the country.

From the year 1702 on the local family named Busquets allowed the Consell General de les Valls to meet in their house. It is still today the seat of the Andorran parliament and called Casa de la Vall. You can find it in the historic city center close to the cathedral Sant Esteve, above the Estadi Nacional and the Estació Nacional d’Autobusos. From its terrace you also have nice views on the city and the valley. Plus: there is an elevator that takes you up to the parliament.

By the way: since 1993 Andorra has a modern constitution suitable for a sovereign democratic state. The bishop of Urgell and the French president (as the successor of the Count of Foix) are still co-heads of Andorra but only tasked with representational duties.
