When the hotels at Banff are fully booked, travel agency typically find alternatives at Canmore which is just a 30 minutes drive on the Trans Canada Highway. The city has a nice city center squeezed into the space between Bow river and the highway and offers all you need for an overnight stay. At the southern end of the city you’ll find the Solara Resort which is a combination of three different hotels (Aurora, Bow, Chinook). Once you arrive get you hotel name, room number and door code (they don’t use keys) from the reception and park in the vast underground carpark.
The parking lots are number but not assigned, you just should use one of the lots marked for your hotel so that you’re close to the relevant elevator. The hotel has a very well equipped liquor store on the ground floor and a coffee bar that serves good breakfast and provides you with food packages for hikes. At the Solara I had a giant flat in the Aurora part with two bathrooms, two sleeping rooms, a living room, a balcony with a BBQ grill and a fully equipped kitchen. Way too much for me, but a pleasant stay. If you need dinner fast: there is an Asian restaurant close to the resorts main entrance that offers quite acceptable food for takeaway.
