Peyto Lake

Turquoise ice-cold water forming a lake between forests and mountains of the Banff National Park, that’s Peyto Lake – maybe the most beautiful lake I’ve ever seen. It is fed by the glaciers surrounding it and its color is special because of fine rock particles (‘glacial flour’) that are carried into the lake. It is named after trapper Bill Peyto who was active in this region in the 19th century.

You can access Peyto Lake from the famous Icefields Parkway leading through the Canadian Rockies. A sign will lead you to a parking area and from there it is a steep 700 meters walk up the mountain on an asphalted pedestrian path. Up on the mountain there is a nice wooden viewing platform (‘Peyto Lake Upper Viewpoint‘) that gives you best views on the scenery. Unfortunately many tourists ignore the signs and fences and damage the surrounding forest. Absolutely unneccessary.
