Athabasca falls

Just 55 kilometers south of Jasper and directly next to the Icefields Parkway you can find the Athabasca Falls – a breathtaking natural spectacle that captivates visitors with its raw power and stunning beauty. It only has a height of 24 meters, but the waterfalls has cut deep into the rocks at the Canadian Rocky Mountains and can become truly powerful throughout the year.

Athabasca Falls is fed by glacial meltwater from the Columbia Icefield arriving via the La Biche River, creating a thundering cascade that carves through limestone rocks. The water’s strength has sculpted unique geological features, including potholes and intricate rock formations that tell a story millions of years in the making. Plants manage to grow within the falls and take the needed humidity from the spray.

Accessibility is a key highlight of Athabasca Falls. The trail is a short one kilometer route that takes just 15 minutes to complete, making it perfect for visitors of all ages and abilities. The parking area is directly next to the falls and sufficiently large. The waterfall changes color with the seasons due to glacial rock flour, and the surrounding landscape provides stunning views of the Rocky Mountains. In winter, the falls create unique ice sculptures.
