I honestly didn’t expect Oudtshoorn to be the ‘Ostrich Capital of the World‘, but it is. If you want to learn more about the historic reasons, try out a place like the Safari Ostrich Farm where you can see 4,000 of these birds held for getting feathers, eggs, meat and leather. You can observe different species of ostriches and enjoy viewing the birds that can run up to 70 km/h on a tractor tour.
The Safari Ostrich Farm offers visitors an entertaining and educational experience centered around the fascinating world of ostrich farming. It is a family-friendly farm providing a unique opportunity to learn about the history and importance of ostrich farming in the region. They even got a lot of guides speaking German. Visitors can take guided tours where they’ll see ostriches up close, learn about their breeding, farming practices, and the various uses of ostrich products, from feathers to leather.
The farm also offers a chance to feed and interact with the birds – if you love some adventure and bring yourself in (perceived) danger. Ostrich fodder is available for cheap five Rand, you can feed them while on the tour or through the fences. You’ll find out very soon that these birds are not only fast, but also very strong. In addition to the ostriches, the farm has a shop where visitors can purchase ostrich-related products and souvenirs. You can also just get there for lunch or for shopping.
