A bit outside of Oudtshoorn you can find the De Zeekoe Guest Farm, a lovely guest house on farm grounds. It is one of these places I enjoy very much with well-designed rooms, balconies to look out on the surrounding landscape and a nice restaurant and bar. What makes them special is on the one hand that they’re trying to hire locals and use local produce wherever possible.
On the other hand you might wonder why on a farm named after manatees (Zeekoe) there are so many images of meerkats. The reason for that is that on the farm grounds a family of meerkats are living and an independent tour operator is doing sunrise events with them and that is why the meerkat has become the signature animal of the farm. Upfront to sunrise you’ll have to drive a little bit and will then be seated next to the current home of the cute little guys. Once they’ve come out, warmed up and leave for their day job you can return to the hotel for breakfast; a unique experience.
