Cape Town, one of South Africa’s most iconic cities, has a rich history shaped by its strategic location at the southern tip of the African continent. The area was originally inhabited by indigenous groups, including the Khoisan people, before the arrival of Europeans. In 1652, the Dutch East India Company established a refreshment station at the Cape of Good Hope, led by Jan van Riebeeck. This marked the beginning of European colonization in South Africa. As Cape Town is the place of the first European settlements, it is also called the ‘Mother city‘.
Cape Town quickly became a vital port for ships traveling to and from the East, and its population grew with the influx of Dutch settlers, slaves from the East Indies, and other immigrants. After the British took control of the Cape Colony in the early 19th century, Cape Town became a central hub for trade, governance, and culture. The city has since evolved into a multicultural metropolis with a complex history that includes periods of political unrest, segregation, and the eventual end of apartheid.
Today, Cape Town is a vibrant city that attracts visitors from around the world, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and historical landmarks. Table Mountain, one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature, is perhaps the most iconic site, offering panoramic views of the city and surrounding coastline. The V&A Waterfront is another must-visit destination, bustling with shops, restaurants, and entertainment options, while also housing the Two Oceans Aquarium.
For history buffs, the District Six Museum offers a glimpse into the lives of the people displaced during the apartheid era, and a visit to Robben Island, where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for much of his life, provides deep insight into South Africa’s struggle for freedom. The Cape Winelands, located just outside the city, are home to some of the world’s finest wine estates, and the Cape of Good Hope, at the tip of the peninsula, is famous for its rugged beauty and historical significance. With its rich cultural experiences, breathtaking landscapes, and storied past, Cape Town remains one of the most captivating destinations in the world.
I was staying at a guesthouse shortly underneath the lower station of the cable car up to Table Mountain. That guaranteed great views from my balcony and a quiet neighborhood, but required travelling longer distances into the city. Fortunately, Uber is well established and prices are very reasonable. I often used the service to get to the V&A Waterfront which was my safe harbor in evening hours. Overall you should nevertheless have a rental car while being at Cape Town – otherwise it is way harder to discover all the beauty around the city and there is definitely much to sea.
