The Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, located on the slopes of Table Mountain in Cape Town, is one of the most renowned botanical gardens in the world, celebrated for its stunning array of South African flora. Established in 1913, Kirstenbosch showcases a vast collection of indigenous plants, including a variety of fynbos species, aloe, and proteas, and serves as a hub for plant conservation and research. One of the garden’s most unique features is the Boomslang, a wooden canopy walkway that allows visitors to experience the beauty of the garden from a bird’s-eye view.

The Boomslang (meaning ‘tree snake‘ in Afrikaans) is an architecturally impressive structure that winds through the treetops, offering panoramic views of the surrounding garden, mountain slopes, and the Cape Peninsula. This elevated walkway provides an immersive experience of the garden’s biodiversity and offers an opportunity to see plant life and wildlife from a unique perspective, making it a highlight of any visit to Kirstenbosch. Some people start their ascent to the Table Mountain from Kirstenbosch, others just enjoy nature of the botanical garden and have a coffee in its coffee bar. Whatever you plan, just be aware that there are four types of snakes in the garden – but I didn’t see a single one.
