Waterfront

A place that tourists visit frequently at Cape Town is the Victoria & Alfred Waterfront (or short V&A Waterfront) – the area around the harbor of the city. It is named after Queen Victoria of England and her son Alfred who laid the foundation for the wave breaker in front of the harbor. The area is fascinating as it consists of the still active harbor, wharfs where ships are repaid as well as a very touristy section with bars, restaurants and a vast shopping mall.

The waterfront is considered the most secure place of Africa and security staff is always present; this makes it the perfect place to spend a relaxed evening in the city and allows you to spend time after sunset outdoors without any worries. It is a good place for food and also for shopping – there is a large amount of shops selling the typical souvenirs from Africa.

At the waterfront you’ll find a ferris wheel (The Cape Wheel), the Nobel Square with the four Nobel prize winners of the country (including Mandela and Tutu), a great view on the table mountain, the amazing Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (MOCAA) art museum, the Two Oceans aquarium as well as the ferry boats to Robben Island (close to the old clock tower). The Victoria Wharf offers numerous parking lots but most probably you want to Uber in and out – I used the MOCAA is my favorite drop-off and pick-up zone.
