The city of Regensburg was founded by the Romans in 179 CE. They created their military fortification called Castra Regina facing the river Donau. The main gate of every of these fortifications was called Porta praetoria and the Porta praetoria of Castra Regina has been preserved throughout the centuries. In fact, in addition to the Porta Nigra of Trier the gate at Regensburg is the only preserved Roman gate in Germany.
In medieval times the Porta praetoria became a part of the brewery of the bishop and was fully integrated into this new building. And there it is still today: One of the two towers is still visible and you can pass through the gate as in ancient times. It was invisible for many years but was rediscovered in 1885. The stone which was once placed above the gate and which describes the foundation of Castra Regina can today be found in the Historisches Museum.
