The two towers of the Gothic-style cathedral St. Peter dominate the skyline of the city of Regensburg. Entering the building feels like being teleported into a different world, with the high ceiling and the rich decorations it has a special atmosphere. The church was built from the year 1275 on and became usable in 1450. The creation of the towers lasted until 1869, all in all a very long construction period.
A very controversial element is the ‘Judensau’ attached to the outside of the church, facing the former Jewish quarter of the city. It depicts three Jewish citizens drinking from a pig which is an impure animal in Jewish belief. This element was created to disparage the inhabitants of Jewish belief and everybody is certain that it shouldn’t be there. But it is part of German history and keeping this sign of antisemitism helps to assure that this part of our history never returns. Since 2005 a text is attached underneath to explain the situation.
