The oldest and largest park of София is the Borissowa gradina, named after tsar Boris III from the House of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha-Koháry. It was created in 1884 in the Southeast outside of the city; due to the vast growth of София it is now part of the city center. When you walk through it you can see the different faces of this place: in the North it is a landscape park, further south it is more like a forest.
Within the park you can find different lakes, sports arenas (like the Vasil Levski stadium used by the soccer club CSKA), the old TV tower and an outdoor swimming pool. Part of the landscape garden is a large memorial called Bratska mogila (grave of brothers). It is dedicated to the partisans who died during World War II and it also contains their remains.
The Borissowa gradina is a place that the inhabitants of the city use to do sports, to gather and to relax. Drinks and snacks are sold from small shops and you can also rent bikes to discover the area. After the breakdown of Communism there wasn’t enough money to preserve the garden in full beauty and it looks a bit shabby in some parts. But it is still a nice place to relax in the sun and explore the different areas and monuments you can find within.
