Palace Pier

Once the city of Brighton, United Kingdom had two rivalling piers: the West Pier and the Palace Pier. The first one burned down and the latter is now a pleasure pier with an amusement park on the waters. It was built from 1891 to 1899 and offers rollercoaster rides, merry-go-rounds, gambling machines and candy floss. You can pay per ride or get a dayticket – but does someone really want to spend a whole day there?

As a visitor you can access the pier without paying an entrance fee, you can walk to the end of the pier (where only a small section is not blocked) or have a drink above the sea. I didn’t really get the idea of putting an amusement park on a pier – especially as they don’t really use the location, the park could be everywhere else. Maybe it’s a British peculiarity I just don’t understand. 🙂 But the people seem to love it, four million visitors get here every year. Additionally many books, films and TV series refer to this pier or use it as scenery; including Tim Burtons ‘Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street‘.
