Cathedral at the sea

Cádiz, Spain is a city in the eastern end of Andalucía. It is famous for its harbour which is very important for touristic sea cruises and the Spanish military fleet. The natural conditions show why: the city is located on a land tongue that reaches into the bay of Cádiz. It is maybe the perfect harbour.

Most important landmark is the cathedral Santa Cruz sobre las Aguas from the 18th century CE which is located close to the sea. It is a catholic church painted in white with domes covered in yellow tiles. A strange but beautiful combination. Even if you dislike sacral buildings you have to visit this place: one of the towers (torre poniente) can be visited.

You have to walk up the ramps that the muezzin took by horse in earlier days and then you can watch the church and the city from up above. Driving to Cádiz involves crossing high bridges over the bay of Cádiz – even more fun. During the last years they seem to have added another connection – my GPS believed that I was driving over water. 😉
