The Kiyomizu-dera is an impressive Buddhist temple in the east of Kyōto, Japan. It is located on a hill and offers wonderful views. Since 1994 it is a UNESCO world heritage site. The temple dates back to the year 798, the current wooden buildings are from 1633.
The name Kiyomizu means pure water and refers to a waterfall within the temple complex. The temple building and a nice terrace are attached to a mountain and standing on a large wooden construction. To protect this situation the area surrounding Kiyomizu-dera was bought by the temple community to prevent new buildings.
