The IGA-Park in Rostock is a wide expanse of green and waterfront leisure created out of the grounds of the International Garden Exhibition held in 2003. Once an industrial harbour area, it was completely transformed into a landscaped park that combines themed gardens, modern art installations, and broad lawns along the Warnow river. Today it stands as one of the city’s most attractive recreational spaces, linking Rostock’s maritime heritage with a contemporary vision of open urban living.
Visitors to the park will find a surprising variety of attractions. There are beautifully designed gardens reflecting international styles, a Japanese garden with tranquil pathways, and playful features like water gardens and themed floral displays. Families enjoy the adventure playgrounds and walking trails, while history enthusiasts are drawn to the preserved cargo ship Dresden, now serving as a museum ship moored at the park’s edge. With its riverside promenades and picnic areas, the IGA-Park also encourages simple pleasures such as strolling, cycling, or pausing to watch the activity on the water.
One of the focal points within the site is the Parkbühne, an open-air concert venue set against a backdrop of greenery and river views. This amphitheatre-style stage has become known throughout northern Germany for hosting major open-air concerts, festivals, and cultural events, particularly in the summer months. Its lively programme adds a musical energy to Rostock’s calendar, ensuring that the IGA-Park is not only a place of quiet relaxation during the day but also a vibrant gathering spot where world-class performers attract audiences from near and far. I came here for a nice concert of Dritte Wahl supported by Das Lumpenpack. A great outdoor location with good facilities and catering.
