The Museo de Arte Costarricense, located in San José, Costa Rica, is a significant cultural institution that opened its doors in 1978. The museum is housed in the former terminal building of La Sabana International Airport, which operated from 1940 to 1974. This unique setting adds historical value to the museum, as it preserves the architectural heritage of Costa Rica while showcasing a diverse collection of over 6,000 artworks spanning from the mid-19th century to the present day.

One of the museum’s most notable features is the Salón Dorado (Golden Hall), which served as the diplomatic reception area during the building’s time as an airport. The Salón Dorado is adorned with a remarkable bronze-colored stucco bas-relief mural covering all four walls, created by French sculptor and goldsmith Louis Féron between 1939 and 1940. This 150-square-meter mural depicts Costa Rica‘s history from pre-Columbian times to the 1940s, offering visitors a captivating artistic and educational experience. The last image of the timeline is the opening of the airport itself.
