Käppele

If you need some good views on Würzburg, if you want to enjoy heavenly silence or if you need to do penance for something – think about taking the steep ascent to the Käppele. It is a pilgrimage church high above the city also referred to as Mariä Heimsuchung. The Käppele was built by famous architect Balthasar Neumann in Rococo style and was consecrated in 1754.

The word Käppele itself means small chapel. Mariä Heimsuchung is a surprisingly beautiful but dark church. If you’re not so much into chapels it is still worth to climb up the hill because of the terrace and the view on Würzburg. Sometimes the small bar next to it is also open and offers refreshments.

To climb up you have to take around 250 steps within a way of cross with 14 stations. It is the largest of its kind in Germany. To access it, walk southbound on the western shore of river Main from the Alte Mainbrücke. From the Mergentheimer Straße you can get into the Nikolausstraße where the stairs begin.
